When I first learned of Choice Theory two years ago, I read the book and attempted practicing it on my own. However, it wasn’t until I started the online course in 2017 that I truly understood the theory and was able to practice it with confidence.

My goal in learning Choice Theory was to improve my relationship with my children. What I didn’t expect was that it helped in all the relationships in my life, including and most importantly my relationship with myself. I felt more confident in my place of work as well as my personal life. My partner and I had a much better understanding of each other and my children gained more respect for me, and I for them.

I truly feel that Choice Theory should be a “mandatory” course for everyone. Not only does it better the relationships with everyone you cross paths with, it allows you to truly open up and understand yourself. I will proudly be a Choice Theory advocate in hopes that everyone can take advantage of this wonderful opportunity, to improve their lives and the lives of our future generations.

I recently completed the new Choice Theory Online Basic Intensive training, and I was very happy to have new skills to use on a daily basis, never thinking that this new knowledge would become such an important part of recovering from a serious injury to come.

Being a sports lover, I went to train at an indoor rock climbing facility as I did every week. That evening, I fell from a 15 feet wall onto the concrete floor and severely fractured my right ankle. After my first surgery, my doctor told me that I would never be able to practice several of the sports that I loved so much, such as alpine skiing, snowboarding, trail running, downhill mountain biking, karate, and many more. I also learned that I would be in a cast for roughly 3 months, followed by 4 months of physio with no driving or weight bearing on my foot until the end of my treatments. There is also the possibly of multiple additional surgeries over the next few years. And no need to add that the pain before and after the first surgery was unbearable!

Prior to this accident, I had plans to compete in several bike races, specialized triathlons and marathons. The news I received from my doctor devastated me, as it had such a negative impact on my lifestyle. I thought this new reality would either destroy my mental stability or make me stronger. I decided it was the perfect occasion to use the principles taught by Dr. Glasser to become stronger instead of becoming depressed. Therefore, each time I feel hopeless, I use Choice Theory to control my behaviours and my thoughts rather than letting my emotions take control.  

Without the tools provided by Choice Theory, managing these negative thoughts and depressing emotions would have been much harder to do. There is no doubt that my Quality World pictures have been modified. However, with the help of Choice Theory, I’m able to better accept this new reality, add new pictures to my Quality World by creating new goals in life, balance my current needs, and maintain a stable state of mind. 

"I learned about Choice Theory in early 2012  when my partner was participating in a Choice Theory training.  I became fascinated with the Choice Theory principles during our conversations and I began reading  Dr Glasser's books, including Choice Theory; A new Psychology of Personal Freedom. These Choice Theory principles came in very handy during  a tough period in my career. I had just been part of  a major transitional shift within the government, where many jobs were eliminated and employees, like myself, were asked to let go of jobs they loved and offered new positions in different departments.  

I decided to accept a position that I wasn't passionate about. It  was  a difficult choice. A short time later I realized I would be  miserable working in this new position and began feeling sad, unmotivated and depressed. Remembering the principles of Choice Theory, I began to question myself, examine my feelings and my behaviors in order to make better choices. I learned to let go of areas where I did not have control and to focus my time and my energies on the areas where I had control. This is when I felt I was beginning to move forward and feeling much better.

Within a few months of using the simple, easy and visual tools offered by Choice Theory, I had found another job that I loved and felt happy again. In 2016, I had the opportunity to participate in the pilot phase of Choice Theory Online which I really enjoyed. This online course offered me additional useful tools to manage both my personal and professional life"
